ABOUT

Research Goals

The Trans Women’s Fertility Project (TWFP) is a small, early-stage research initiative focused on an underexplored aspect of transgender women’s medical lives: infertility, and the absence of reproductive care capable of supporting gestational motherhood.

Infertility—defined in women as the inability to conceive and carry a pregnancy—is a well-documented source of psychological distress across societies and cultures. Transgender women who desire to start families as biological mothers experience a distinct form of fertility grief that remains undercharacterized within existing clinical frameworks.

TWFP focuses on compiling and synthesizing existing research related to these questions, with particular attention to uterus transplantation (UTx) as a potential future pathway for transgender women. Rather than encouraging rapid movement toward clinical application, TWFP supports cautious, incremental research by identifying key barriers and organizing them into clearly defined areas for investigation.

Working in collaboration with clinicians and researchers, TWFP aims to help clarify these challenges and support the development of low-risk, actionable research proposals. Our project approaches this topic as one question within the broader spectrum of women’s health.

TWFP welcomes thoughtful input from medical professionals and others with relevant expertise. The compendium below provides an overview of existing research on trans UTx, outlining several core barriers that invite targeted research attention.
